This area is designated as a nature conservation area in 1889, although previous Cibodas Botanical Garden was founded here in 1830, where quinine and coffee was first cultivated and become the most prominent export materials in the 19th century.

The most prominent of Gede-Pangrango Park are three very different ecosystems, among others: the sub-montane ecosystems (1,000 m-1,500 m), mountain ecosystems (1,500 m - 2900 m) is characterized by tall trees and large, and ecosystems sub-alpine (2,400 m and higher), characterized by meadows where Javanese edelweiss flowers grow in abundance. This park also has a savanna and marsh ecosystems.

In 1977 UNESCO declared a national park of Mount Gede-Pangrango as a Biosphere reserve.

Currently Mount Gede National Park covering an area of ​​15,196 hectares-Pangrango covering Cibodas, Cimungkat, Nature Reserve of Mount Gede-Pangrango, Situgunung recreation areas, and forests on the slopes of Mount Gede (2958 m) and Pangrango (3019 m). Both are connected with the saddle at an altitude of 2,500 m above sea level.
